Despite the fact that Direct Mode is disabled, SteamVR will continue to run in Extended mode. When you restart SteamVR, it will be configured as before. To enable direct mode, choose the icon that says Enable Direct Mode. I cant hide it or even stick it in my crap folder to hide it. Ive uninstalled MVR Demo (never used it, dont have VR, didnt ask it to be installed), but it still persists in my library. Those that remember the earlier days of the Oculus Rift DK1 will recall the somewhat challenging nature of getting VR demo’s to appear let alone perform correctly, with the device being treated, ostensibly as another monitor attached to your face. the Vive may not work if attached to an adaptor, some work some dont. use the HDMI for the Vive, and get an adaptor to run the Monitor off the other output. Valve has just announced that the latest release of SteamVR beta, its virtual reality platform SteamVR just upgraded its rendering pipeline to support Direct Mode, a way to bypass unnecessary operating system clutter to render directly to a VR headset. You need both the Vive and Monitor working at the same time. Uninstalling my GPU drivers (reboot) and then upgrading to both revisions above one at a time.
